Who we are
General
Sibonelo Dance Project is an NPO that started in 2008. Our aim is to increase the cultural capital of African Dance by producing contemporary work that blends modern and traditional dance techniques.
We aim for excellence in all that we do and are proud of the work that we have produced to date.
Children
We have over 150 children from disadvantaged backgrounds involved in the project at any one time. Our aim is to develop children both physically and emotionally by boosting their self-esteem, teaching them the benefit of individual hard work, as well as teamwork and a sense of responsibility towards themselves and others through dance.
Our philosophy is that anyone can dance and so no child who wants to be a part of the project is turned away and all get the chance to perform.
We have outreach classes during the week at Delft township and on weekends at UCT Hiddingh Campus.
Young Adults
We have a smaller group of young adults with whom we work. These consist of youngsters who have come through the children's program as well as youth and adults from outside the program.
The aim of the adult program is to produce work that is worthy of the professional stage.
Our professional dance company provides a pathway for our children into the world of professional dance and provides professional dancers with a creative home.
We offer open professional dance classes at no charge to provide a space for professionals to practice their art and have a home when they are between jobs.
We tell our stories, the stories of Africa in our own unique dance language.
